Woodland Burials’ Culford site sits just north of Bury St Edmunds and takes both full burial and ashes interment.

As with all their Woodlands of Remembrance, the grave is permanent rather than leased, so it will not be re-used the way municipal cemetery plots can be. A native broadleaf tree is planted for every interment, ashes included, and the grave is marked with a hardwood plaque carrying the name and lifespan, replaced when it biodegrades.

The woodland is managed to a scheme approved by Wildlife Trusts and the local authority, so it develops into a working nature reserve rather than being maintained as a memorial garden. The grounds never close.

There are no parish restrictions and no out-of-parish levy, which matters here. Some councils charge up to three times the standard fee for anyone who lived outside the catchment area. Plots can be reserved at today’s prices, with adjacent plots available for families, and services can be religious, secular or nothing at all.
