Ashes in Fireworks in Buckinghamshire
Scattering ashes at sea is one of the most popular ways to say goodbye in the UK, especially for someone who loved the coast, sailing or fishing. You don’t need a licence to scatter ashes at sea, and families can do it from the shore with the landowner’s permission, or take a boat out to a spot that meant something.
Local boat operators run private scattering trips around the coast, from Cornwall and Devon to the Solent, Sussex, the Thames Estuary and Scotland. Most take up to ten or twelve people, and many will stop the engines for a few quiet minutes while you say a few words, play music or scatter flowers.
Below you’ll find UK boat operators offering ashes scattering at sea and on rivers, along with specialists in full burial at sea. For a full guide, read our article on scattering ashes at sea.
How ashes go into fireworks
The ashes are sent to the firework company, which places a small amount into the shells or rockets at its own premises. Only licensed firework companies should do this. The rest of the ashes can be returned to you.
Professional display or self-fire?
A professional display is planned, set up and fired by a trained crew, with insurance, and usually includes a choreographed sequence. Some companies let you press the button to start it. Self-fire packages are cheaper and give you more freedom over time and place, but you’re responsible for setting them off safely.
Rules to be aware of
You’ll need the landowner’s permission wherever you set fireworks off. In England and Wales, fireworks can’t be used between 11pm and 7am, except on Bonfire Night (until midnight) and New Year’s Eve, Diwali and Chinese New Year (until 1am). A professional company will handle the safety side for you.

Can memorial fireworks be part of a celebration of life?
Yes, and that’s one of the most popular reasons families choose them. Read our guide to what a celebration of life is.
Do fireworks companies travel?
