Scattering ashes at sea is one of the most popular ways to say goodbye in the UK, especially for someone who loved the coast, sailing or fishing. You don’t need a licence to scatter ashes at sea, and families can do it from the shore with the landowner’s permission, or take a boat out to a spot that meant something.
Local boat operators run private scattering trips around the coast, from Cornwall and Devon to the Solent, Sussex, the Thames Estuary and Scotland. Most take up to ten or twelve people, and many will stop the engines for a few quiet minutes while you say a few words, play music or scatter flowers.

How a sea scattering trip works
You’ll usually book the whole boat, so it’s just your family on board. The skipper takes you out to a chosen spot, or suggests one, then stops the boat for the ceremony. Ashes are scattered low over the water with the wind behind you, so they don’t blow back, or lowered in a biodegradable water urn. Trips typically last an hour or two, and some operators offer anniversary return trips.
Scattering ashes vs burial at sea
Scattering ashes at sea needs no licence. A full burial at sea is different: it needs a licence from the Marine Management Organisation and is only allowed at a small number of designated sites, such as off the Needles on the Isle of Wight and off Tynemouth. What to take and what to leave behind
Flowers and petals are fine, but avoid anything that won’t break down, such as plastic, balloons, wreaths with wire or foam, or non-biodegradable urns.
